City life, biodiversity, and the best view in town await on the rooftop of IKEA in Copenhagen. Here, at 20 meters high, 1:1 Landscape has created a green sky park with wild-growing urban nature, a pathway network, and comfortable seating areas. Right in the middle of one of the capital’s busiest intersections, 1:1 Landscape and IKEA have brought nature up close to the people of Copenhagen. Here, you can completely unwind, experience the changing seasons, and enjoy a unique view over the city.
At the busy street levels along Dybbølsbro, 1:1 Landscape has designed the public spaces and forecourt for the furniture store. These areas have an urban character in both appearance and function due to the high number of daily pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles passing by.
The sky park hosts a wealth of native species from Danish coastal landscapes, with a strong focus on biodiversity to encourage a rich plant and animal life.
To select plants that already grow in the area, 1:1 Landscape studied the geobotany of the nearest green oases: Kalvebod Brygge and Amager Fælled. This means the types of landscapes in these areas, allowing us to build upon the site’s natural flora and fauna. In this way, we ensure that the sky park is an extension of the existing nature and becomes a feast for both birds and insects! This creates the best conditions for biodiversity.
At the same time, plants were chosen that thrive in windy conditions and provide shelter, ensuring the elevated park remains comfortable even in stronger weather—for people, as well as birds and insects. Insect hotels, birdhouses, and brushwood fences provide insects and birds with plenty of new places to live. The cobbles stones are recycled.
The sky park is built on a deck. It requires special knowledge and expertise to make plants thrive on a rooftop, as soil depth is limited. 1:1 Landscape employs qualified staff who are experts in soil conditions, root depths, plant growth conditions, and more.
