For more than half a century, Grønttorvet was a market square where people bought and sold fruit, vegetables and flowers. Today the site has been transformed into the heart of a new neighborhood in Copenhagen; Grønttorvsparken. It is built around three elements: the orchard, lawn and promenade. We have preserved the construction of the old market halls. They have been cleaned and replaced at their original places. Now defining new spaces in the big park and down along the promenade.

The construction creates an illusion of a roof down the promenade and makes it possible to put up solar sails and string lights for summer and winter events such as flea market and Christmas markets. Along the promenade you’ll find The Orangery, the new local café and communal restaurant. Inspired by Paris it is possible to sit on portable chairs around a huge round fountain.

Big squares of brick in different nuances, some light, other darker, gives human scale to the promade and reaches over and connect with the aligning building. Here different business on the ground floor has outdoor serving and together it creates a market feeling.

“The brick paving here is of high quality. The material communicates with the city’s buildings, so to speak, bringing them across the street and into the park, and most importantly, they are laid in sections that introduce a human scale to the otherwise very long stretch. It is both well-conceived and well-executed.”

The Park

The park has both an orchard and a lawn. The orchard has more than a hundred fruit trees visitors and local can pluck and eat. Apples, pears and plums too! The lawn has a meadow area with tall grass and flowers, good for biodiversity, and space for having fun in the open. On standard grass children can play tag and ball games, while the parents enjoy a picnic.

1:1 landscape has been very quick to understand our thoughts and ideas for Grønttorvet. Their main approach with the orchard, lawn and promenade has held up throughout and adds a lot of value to the area. it has become what we dreamed of
