LED Desk lamp Review & Comparison 2024

Stella S3 is a model by TaoTronics and is delivered in a handy box with a carry handle, an instruction manual, a 60 inches long power pack and a microfiber cloth. In contrast to all the other products that were tested here, the montage with this lamp starts with the stand. The scope of delivery also includes an installation wrench. The body of the lamp is made of dull and black plastic, the screws of the links are made of metal.

The pedestal is quite big and heavy with its diameter of 7.8 inches. The bottom side is gummed to prevent scratches on the desk and to have a steady hold. The lamp reaches a maximal height of 35 inches and is the highest one in our test. She is divided in four links, the pedestal, a short arm of the lamp, a longer one and a lamp head with LED lamps. The short arm on the pedestal can be twisted to the left and right in a 90° angle. There is an adjustable hinge embedded between the short and long arm which can be moved in a 90° angle. An additional hinge is located between the arm of the lamp and the lamp head. It can be adjusted back and forth in a 140° angle. The head lamp can additionally be twisted to the left and right in a 90° angle. Unfortunately, the lamp is a bit unsteady and the hinges in particular seem to be beat-up which has the effect that a quick dwindling of the versatile adjustability occurs.

The control panel is located on the lower part of the lamp arm and includes seven sensors. One to switch-on and off, plus and minus to regulate the luminance and four sensors to adjust the color temperature which are marked through different activity symbols. The highest color temperature is switched-on by tipping on the pen symbol, the lowest by tipping on the moon-stars symbol. The handling is good and the meaning of the key symbols is quickly figured out. The symbol of the function that is switched on, shines in a white color. When the lamp is switched off, the on-off-switch shines quite bright which enables an easier on-off switch in the dark but could also disturb the sleep. A button that switches off the lamp completely would be really good, which all described TaoTronics, except the TT DL-05, don’t have. This would have the effect that the lamp would not use electricity all the time.

The middle color temperature is produced through the simultaneous LED light of cool and warm white so that they appear to be brighter than other color temperature adjustments using the same adjustments of brightness. The diffusion of the light is good but could be improved with the help of a light conductor. The brightness is infinitely dimmable so that it can be adjusted individually. All tested lamps including this one have a memory function that „memorizes“ the current light adjustment and returns to this adjustment after switching it off and on again.

The USB port is located sideways on the lower arm and provides one ampere.

Some customer’s reviews on amazon say that there is a sound of high-frequency which comes from the power pack. I cannot confirm that. The power pack functions correctly and soundless. The lamp is also perfect for work at a computer due to its versatile adjustments.

The lamp, a power supply pack, a microfiber cloth and a construction manual are included in the delivery. The design is simple but still in a high-quality. The lamp’s manufacture is flawless. It is striking that the lamp is quite heavy although it is fully build up of metal which is partly brushed and hence dull. Unfortunately, the edges are to some extent a little bit sharp which in fact is a safety risk. The control panel on the foot is kept in black plastic. The symbols on it appear in a discreet shiny light when switched on. In the off mode, only the light of the on-off switch remains.

The lamp consists of three elements, a rectangular lamp stand (5.1 in. x 7.4 in.), a lamp arm and a lamp head. Entirely upright, the hight of the lamp measures 71 cm. The cable is 70 inches long. The lamp has a hinge between the foot and arm of the lamp which enables an angle of ~ 135° to move the arm back and forth. However, the lamp gets an overweight backwards and tilts over when the angle between the lamp stand and arm is adjusted too high. The angle cannot be completely maxed out when the arm is twisted on the foot which is possible in a 90° angle to both side though. Between the arm and the head of the lamp, there is another hinge between the arm and head which also enables a twisting of 135°. Therefore, the lamp head suits to the arm of the lamp or can to stand almost upright. There is the possibility to twist the lamp head to both sides on the upper part in a 90° angle. This lamp is consequently the most adjustable LED desk lamp in our test. The adjustment requires both hands because the pedestal is slightly too light for the weighted lamp.

The control panel is placed on the foot of the lamp. The symbolics of the keys do not appear to be as easy as one would guess if one has not used a product by TaoTronics before. I didn’t get it at first but luckily, there is a construction manual included. So: the coffee cup stands for an increase of color temperature, the book for the decrease. The person with the heart symbolizes the favorite adjustment that can individually be installed. The symbol for the timer is a watch which turns off the lamp automatically within an hour. The moon stands for the night light function. The switch-on button shines very discreet in the standby mode. However, some customers claimed in their reviews that the light hindered them from sleeping or distracted them otherwise. On the other hand, the switch-on button can better be found in the dark. It would be recommendable to chose between a standby mode and turning it off completely.

The night light is attached sideways on the lamp head and can not illuminate simultaneously with the main lamp. The lamp has a memory function which only works with a constant power supply.

The light of the lamp is pleasantly soft und widely spread due to a acrylic light conductor. The night light is not dimmable but shines in a very nice soft light. Another nice feature is that the USB charging station of the lamp possesses two ampere which enables a quick charging of technical devices at the same time as using the lamp.

This is a high-quality lamp for a low price compared to other ones. She can be used as a desk lamp, a bedside lamp or for other purposes when the discreet light of the on-off switch doesn’t distract and the sharp edges are filed if necessary.

That model by TaoTronics called DL-27 has a simple design. The round lamp stand is cased by dull and black plastic and has a diameter of 7 inches. The control panel is embedded in the foot. Not as an own button but as a flat symbol directly on the foot. The arm of the lamp is made of metal which enables a long stability. The upper part of the lamp is made of dull and black metal again as well as the back side of the lamp head whose front side is almost completely filled with the LED panel.

The lamp has a hinge between the foot and the metal arm which enables an adjustment of 90° from an upright position down to the foot. However, it has to be mentioned that the lamp has a tendency to tilt over when the tilt angle is too high. The upper hinge between the arm and the neck part gives space of 125° from an upright position to a position where the hinge is adjacent to the arm. In the neck part, there is a rotatable hinge. The upper part of the neck can be twisted in an 50° angle to both sides. The head with the panel can be twisted in a 180° angle due to a hinge that is located in the middle of the head. Altogether, all the hinges appear very stable.

The handling of the lamp is easy and functional. The four color temperature modes on the sensors are usually displayed through a symbol of activity. The writing hand stands for the coldest mode, the moon for the warmest. The dimming works through a plus-minus button. The adjusted mode is displayed through a small blue-shining dot. The on-off switch also shines in a discreet blue in standby mode. The lamp also has a timer which turns off the light automatically after 60 minutes.

It also has a memory function which memorizes the light adjustments while the lamp is turned off so that the same adjustment can be used again when the lamp is switched on.

The light of the lamp is very pleasant and very diffuse due to the milky light conductor. The middle color temperature is a bit brighter than the other ones. That is caused by the equilateral lighting of cold white and warm white LEDs. But they are not solely visible.

The USB port is attached on the foot and works with one ampere. This can be compared to a USB port of a laptop.

The lamp has consistently positive reviews on amazon. During our testing, there were no bigger deficits. The only thing that could be improved is the fact that the lamp should have the possibility to be switched off entirely instead of running the standby mode.

This desk lamp by Etekcity is similar to the LAMPAT one. It is also divided in three parts, namely the lamps stand, the body element and the arm. It offers four different modes that can be adjusted through 5 levels of brightness. Those four modes stand for reading, study, relax and sleep. Additionally, the panel has a timer function which will urn off the lamp automatically after one hour and an on-off switch. All buttons are flat and can easily be used through the easy touch mode. The USB port is located on the right side of the body element.

As all other lamp, this lamp has also the ability to be adjusted individually by using different angels. The body element is to 180° rotatable which enables a moving of the lamp without moving the lamp stand. Furthermore, can be tilt over up to 55° to stretch the light further on the desk. The arm can be moved 135° so that it can be folded up to the main element. While the lamp is not in use, some space can be saved.

This lamp is set up for a comfortable workspace with a light that seems natural in order to prevent a glare on computer screens and eyestrain. The charging port gives the opportunity to charge not only a phone but a variety of electronic devices.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of lamps, that have a tilting danger because the lamp stand does not appear to be steady enough. The producer of this lamp promises a sturdy base which prevents a tilting over. This also allows an easy assembling, storing and moving from one place to another. The base also won’t heat up so it can be carried around without any concern. As a further feature, the lamp has a memory function which remembers the last adjusted function when the lamp is turned the lamp back on.

Customers claim that it is easy to miss some of the buttons on the panel because they are flat. This seems to be generally a problem with flat buttons on the panel.
