Seaside Resort of the 21st Century
OKRA has developed a long-term vision for Cadzand-Bad in which coastal safety goes hand in hand with a quality boost for the coastal town. The coast is constantly changing, especially in the dynamic delta of the South-West Netherlands. Rising sea levels and the high demands on coastal safety call for reinforcement of the coast at Cadzand. OKRA has studied how future construction in the coastal zone relates to the next generation of coastal defences.
The proposed zoning of the coastal zone is linked to rules of play for buildings and public space that will ensure that the front line at sea will also meet future requirements for coastal defence for about 50 years. The long-term perspective also provided frameworks for a quality impulse. This seaside resort of the 21st century is cashing in on its new zest by acquiring a seaside status and focusing on wellness. A significant increase in residential tourism makes it possible to switch from seasonal accommodation to year-round operation.
