Originally known as MetroTech Center, Brooklyn Commons is a 16-acre, 12-building property built in the 1980s as a self-contained office. Brookfield Properties recently undertook a $50 million renovation of the superblock, revitalizing it as a thriving urban hub.
In addition to upgrades to three of MetroTech’s buildings, a central 3.6-acre green space, now called Brooklyn Commons Park, was refurbished by Field Operations. The project includes enhanced lighting, new wayfinding elements, reimagined planting, and a Streetlife furnishing concept that fosters opportunities for social engagement while navigating the unique challenges of an urban site condition.
The refurbished landscape centers around Myrtle Promenade, a publicly accessible pedestrian corridor connecting Jay Street to Flatbush Avenue and running tangentially to a green space called ‘The Commons.’
Numerous electrical and civil services lines and a subway line run beneath the site. These conditions dictated that any landscape additions or interventions be movable or designed to accommodate access for maintenance of underground services. Five existing concrete planters on Myrtle Promenade were retained and integrated into the design to refresh the landscape features while adding seating and more ways to occupy space.
Field Operations worked with Streetlife for modern, customizable furnishings that could meet the site’s specific needs.
The five existing granite planter curbs along the Promenade are now cleverly disguised within custom Streetlife benches that sit cantilevered above the curbs. The benches, made in Accoya, can be removed as required and include various backrests, armrests, and seating depths. At both ends of the Promenade, large platform-style benches engage the urban realm and provide uses for performance, seating, and gathering. These benches give a feeling of permanence, but can be removed for operational flexibility.
Existing trees and lawn areas were upgraded within ‘The Commons’ area, and to create much-desired recreation space, Streetlife Solid Series picnic sets were added. Additionally, double-sided Solid benches were added, providing more seating options for relaxation.
The refurbishment of Brooklyn Commons revitalizes public spaces for existing and future tenants and enhances creative space for the broader Brooklyn neighbourhood. Since completing the renovation, Brookfield Properties has hosted community-focused events through its Arts Brookfield program, including theatre performances, outdoor movie nights, exercise classes, children’s events, holiday celebrations, food festivals, and live music.
