Real-time visualization enhances the design process by enabling designers to generate, document, and visualize simultaneously from one model. Here are three examples where it was used to help the workflows and projects that advocate healthier, more enjoyable, and environmentally responsible spaces.
Captivating clients with layers of landscape
Marpa is a landscape architecture and construction firm based in Boulder, Colorado. They specialize in a contemplative design process and envisioning wonder during the build, giving clients a magical feeling with their sleek and modern gardens.
Project Manager Brian Deck works with clients during the early concept and active construction phases, and he shares how using real-time visualization helps him open up their imaginations with curated perspectives of layered, invitational, and immersive garden spaces so they can fully envision their spaces as living compositions.

“Imagery is essential for clients, and sometimes it can be restrictive if what’s being shown isn’t easily understood. This is why I like to show them more than a static image. Real-time visualization lets me fly through the model live, which is captivating to imagine the experience of these gardens.”
Collaborating with teams on a tight schedule
KeurK is a firm based in Lille, France, specializing in architecture and visualization. Together with Henning Larsen, they designed the new headquarters for the European Metropolis of Lille called Biotope in 2017.

Olivier Riauté, Founder of KeurK, explains how they wanted to create a space reflecting health and renewal, an urban sanctuary for the employees of the European Medicines Agency.
“Health, wellness, and sustainability were at the heart of the project. Our intention from early on was to ensure it was reflected in the design, from the orientation of the facades to the vegetation of the building,” he shares.
The building’s layout shows how natural light, fresh air, and greenery were prioritized in the design process. The atrium gets filled with sunlight, courtyard gardens line open-air balconies, and a terraced green roof covers the building’s footprint.

They had a tight schedule, and real-time visualization helped ensure everyone was on the same page. Olivier shares, “Using real-time visualization with the BIM model allowed us to communicate our concept and keep everyone involved up to date. It was useful for collaborating with the construction team. It gave us a flexible way of working together.”
Raising capital for a non-profit organization
Overland Partners is a firm based in San Antonio, Texas. Known for their innovative and sustainable design, they are regarded as one of the top architecture firms in the United States. In 2016, they partnered with ChildSafe, a children’s advocacy center in Bexar County, Texas, to design a new space called the Harvey E. Najim Children and Family Center.

The Overland team opted for a biophilic design because of nature’s calming influence. The Salado Creek Campus was chosen specifically for its park-like setting, providing a great opportunity for nature to play an important role in the healing process. Surrounded by trees, the design included gardens, green roofs, and natural bioswales filled with native plantings.
As with many projects for non-profit organizations, an extensive fundraising effort was needed to raise the capital required. Using real-time visualization allowed the Overland team to show potential donors the connection between their donations and the finished project and how they were making a difference. It helped them secure an initial commitment of $5 million to the project.

Project Manager James Lancaster shares, “We created renderings and video fly-throughs for use during meetings and presentations. The ease and efficiency allowed us to quickly provide updated collateral with little disruption in developing the project’s design and communication. Rendering that normally takes days to generate only took a few hours to accomplish.”
