Barcelona launches an international ideas competition for young architects to transform 10 dividing walls and improve its public space.

– The call, made jointly with UNESCO and the International Union of Architects, is the first step towards the World Capital of Architecture 2026 and is part of the legacy that the event will leave in the city

– The objective is to implement the winning proposals on a dividing wall in each district of Barcelona, all of them permanent dividing walls that have become new facades and that will not disappear or be covered by other buildings according to the current planning

– Ideas that propose improving urban quality, housing habitability, sustainability and biodiversity will be evaluated

– The budget for the implementation of the proposals will be around 4.5 million euros and will be covered by the City Council, except for those projects that include the opening of windows and balconies, which will have to be covered 50% by private owners

Barcelona is taking a step forward to improve the quality of public space through the World Capital of Architecture that the city will hold in 2026. As part of the Architecture Weeks, taking place in the city from May to June, Barcelona launched a new international ideas competition for young architects to transform 10 permanent dividing walls, one in each district, and turn them into new facades. This call, organized by the Barcelona City Council and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, is seeking architectural proposals that give meaning to walls that are currently anonymous and without any prominence, exposed in public space in a permanent provisional state.
