Parco at Fornuddens School: Enhancing Learning and Play in the Park

presented by Nola

Fornuddens School, near Stockholm, is a modern educational space where architecture and nature meet. The schoolyard is furnished with Nola’s Parco furniture series, fostering creativity, social interaction, and active learning in the outdoor environment. Parco’s versatility and design help create inviting spaces for both play and learning.

Fornuddens School, nestled in the heart of the green park Fornuddsparken on the outskirts of Stockholm, Sweden, is a modern educational facility designed to blend seamlessly with its natural surroundings. Designed by Tengbom architects, the school was completed in 2021 in response to Tyresö’s growing population together with the increasing need for community-centered schools. The design embraces the “school in a park” concept, where architecture and nature merge to create a space that promotes movement, learning, and interaction. Nola’s Parco furniture series strengthens this vision, adding layers of both creativity and social engagement to the outdoor spaces.

The schoolyard encourages both play and movement, with features such as a visually striking running track that doubles as a play area and an athletic facility. The outdoor environment serves not only as a space for physical activity but also as an integral part of the educational experience. Gardens, playgrounds, and quiet spaces enhance learning while supporting students’ overall well-being.

Nola’s Parco furniture series, designed by the award-winning duo Broberg & Ridderstråle, was carefully chosen to complement Fornuddens School’s innovative approach. Known for its seamless integration into a variety of settings, Parco offers both comfort and style. At Fornuddens School, it helps create spaces where students can gather, collaborate, and relax.

The design of Parco fits perfectly with the “school in a park” concept. The clean lines and subtle curves of the chairs, benches, and tables mirror the organic flow of the landscape, creating flexible areas for group work and relaxation. Whether students are collaborating at long tables with built-in benches or lounging in Parco’s swivel chairs, the furniture adapts to their diverse needs.

The choice of Jatoba wood for Parco’s seating and tabletops reflects a carefully selected balance between sustainability and durability. Jatoba, known for its ability to withstand wear in public spaces, is ideal for a school environment where the furniture faces frequent use. With Parco’s metal frames painted in lively colours like yellow, peach, and turquoise, the playful palette brings energy to the schoolyard and complements the surrounding greenery.

The Parco series’ balance of aesthetics and function embodies Broberg & Ridderstråle’s design philosophy. At Fornuddens School, Parco adds fluidity to the outdoor spaces, encouraging movement, play, and spontaneous interaction.

More than just a place for recess, the schoolyard at Fornuddens School is a space for learning and interaction. Outdoor educational elements, such as the school garden and performance areas, extend the classroom into the outdoors, encouraging students to engage with nature, work in groups, and learn outside traditional settings. This design approach ensures that the schoolyard serves as an educational environment for students of all ages.
