A space former considered part of a school playground LAND has transformed into a public space at the heart of Södermalm in Stockholm, known as ‘Lilla Rosendal’. It used to be a mere opening in between two streets, with a paved surface enclosed by tall fences where children learned to ride bikes, played ball, and ran freely. The new Lilla Rosendal emphasizes the informality and intimacy, maintaining an open middle with cultivated edges.

New plantings along the streets, roses against the adjacent school’s facade, and a few additional trees in corners defines the space. A long table in the sunniest spot is ideal for lunch breaks, chess games, or small neighbor gatherings. The space is made part of street life, inviting people to linger or pass through. Functioning like a street corner, yet in a larger format. In the center, a gravel surface surrounds the prominent center piece: a cast concrete edge with shimmering water fountains on a dark asphalt floor. This central area retains the functionality of, cycling, running and playing, now enriched with a touch of added enjoyment.
